Introduction

The Information Technology Services Department (ITS) is responsible for providing and supporting the Sohar University (SU) entire computer based information systems requirements. Its objective is to ensure that SU has the most advanced and efficient information technology resources and tools. ITS supports the information technology needs of the SU faculties, students and staff. ITS develops, maintains and inserts the various technology tools that can serve the goals and objectives of the SU, providing the required teaching electronic tools and facilities.

Other objectives of ITS is providing the SU with the telephone systems connecting the various locations of the SU campus with both network and telephones. ITS also provides and maintains the various audio/video equipment such as data show projectors, sound systems and announcement LCD screens.

ITS provides all possible support to students and staff - providing required equipment, creating accounts , maintaining the security of data, providing advice and consultation support, and more.

Department Overview:

ITS has been an integral part of the University infrastructure since SU began. At that time the University had only 150 computers serviced by only four ITS staff members currently, we have more than 1000 computers and another huge number of configured laptops used by students. We have more than 12 computer labs, where a huge number of computers available for use at any time by any student.

The services provided by ITS increased over time, we are responsible for all electronic communications, all video/audio facilities, and all electronic devices regardless of their use inside of the campus (except those used by engineering faculty). ITS developed very fast and effective services and support in all its related fields. An advanced and comprehensive administrative management system is working in a fully networked environment, a fast and reliable file and e-mail exchange system has been in place since the beginning of the university.

At the same time we are working now on new plans to develop and enhance the type and the quality of services provided by ITS, such as the internet speed, website and e-mail services. GFP campus is connected also to the main campus by a VPN, and we provide continuous support to have an efficient teaching environment.

ITS provides a comprehensive support for lecturers by providing them with many video/audio facilities such as data show projectors in most of the classes or interactive boards like those in the multimedia laboratories. ITS staff development is a priority in Sohar University where many training courses are conducted in addition to the attendance of seminars or workshops.
