Sohar University believes that all universities have shared educational objectives but maintaining an outstanding position among universities can be achieved only through distinction and uniqueness. Thus, the University has pledged to realize these objectives.

From the very beginning, the University has vowed to work according to clear visions and strategies based on well-prepared plans and feedback from the different sectors of society. The masterminds of the University have worked hard to realize their desired objectives. They have devised plans and programmes to play a major role in preparing future generations of students to meet challenges in the workplace. As a result, graduates of the University enjoy respect and appreciation from all sectors concerned .
Inauguration
Sohar University was opened in the academic year 1997 – 1998 under the name of ‘Sohar College for Applied Sciences’. In the academic year 2000 – 2001, it was made the first private university in the Sultanate of Oman. This was a remarkable step taken by the Board of Directors of the Omani Company for Educational and Training Investments that followed the vision of His Majesty the Sultan Qaboos, the founder and the leader of Modern Oman.
Academic Affiliation
The University is affiliated in most of its programmes with the University of Queensland in Australia, one of the most prominent universities in the world, and is a member of the group of the Universitas universities (Universitas 21). It is also affiliated with a number of programmes with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Studies at Mu'tah University in Jordan, which is one of the most reputable and prestigious universities in the country. The University also plans to have affiliation in post-graduate studies with a number of other international universities. The aim is to benefit from the experience of these universities and to utilize their expertise and apply it to the Omani environment. This application should not let us lose our identity or originality. On the contrary, it will enable us to combine modern and traditional approaches to the needs of the current job market.
Academic and Administrative Staff
The University attracts highly qualified academic staff from various international universities to meet the demand of its academic programmes. All staff meet standards of quality assurance agreed with the relevant affiliated university. Staff include citizens of 23 nations who work in the four faculties and the University Preparation Programme. This multinational staff with varied backgrounds and expertise enrich the quality of education provided to the students.

Regarding the administrative staff, the university contains many administrative sections that support the academic sections of the university. In this respect, the university gives priority of recruitment to distinguished local personnel to ensure the stability and continuity of the quality service presented to students. 86% of the administrative staff are Omanis and only a few posts are still occupied by expatriates to benefit from their expertise. The total number of academic and administrative staff is now over 250. This number is always increasing to meet the demands of the new sections that are constantly being added. Moreover, the university does not neglect upgrading the skills and knowledge of the administrative staff. They are given opportunities for training. They attend training courses, workshops, seminars and symposiums that are conducted inside or outside the university to further develop and enhance their skills both academically and administratively.
